Common was born Lonnie Rashied Lynn on the South Side of Chicago.
A Muslim. He is best known for songs that focus on spirituality, poverty, and other issues to do with social awareness. Common debuted in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow A Dollar?, and maintained a significant underground following into the late 90s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians. His first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. He was nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. Common has also started a burgeoning film career, starting with a role in the action thriller, Smokin' Aces, which will be followed by a part in American Gangster. Chicago native's hometown son, is a brilliant manifestation of raw, warm, soulful, pure, contemporary hip-hop talent.
Featured recently on Chicago's own "The Music Experience" with Dedry Jones. His low key, down to earth personality really hit home with his native Chicagoans and also with Dedry, as they spoke on his upbringing, acting career, hat lineSoji, which is sold in its stores in Italy and New York City,
books, and music. Performing live a track from the first single “The People” from Common's latest CD, released on Geffen Records "Finding Forever," that hit # 1 on the charts in August 2007.
COMMON also started the Common Ground Foundation, an organization dedicated to utilizing the cultural relevance of Hip-Hop to serve as an advocate for justice, education, to fight poverty, and to increase health awareness amongst youth in underserved communities throughout the United States.
